Australia's New Solar Incentive Program

Starting July 1, 2025, Australian homeowners can claim tax credits covering approximately 30% of rooftop solar installation costs. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program targets residential and small business solar systems, aiming to accelerate Australia's transition to renewable energy.

Program Details

The rebate applies to both new installations and upgrades of existing systems. Homeowners can claim up to AUD $3,000 for solar panel installations, with additional credits available for battery storage systems. The program will be administered through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

Australia's Solar Leadership

Australia already leads the world in per capita solar adoption, with over 3.92 million solar PV installations generating 37.8 GW of power as of 2024. Solar accounts for nearly 20% of the country's electricity production according to the National Electricity Market data.

Government Objectives

"This initiative puts money back in household budgets while advancing our climate goals," stated Energy Minister Chris Bowen. The program aims to:

  • Add 100,000+ new solar installations annually
  • Reduce residential electricity bills by 30-50%
  • Cut carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes by 2030

Eligibility and Application

All Australian homeowners are eligible, including renters with landlord approval. Applications open July 1 via energy.gov.au, requiring documentation from certified installers. The program complements existing state-level incentives in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.
