NEW YORK (ANP) - The stock markets in New York showed a mixed picture at the end of trading on Thursday, following significant losses the previous day.

The Dow Jones Index ended almost flat at 41,859.09 points, after a 1.9% drop the day before. The S&P 500 closed slightly lower at 5,842.01 points, following a 1.6% loss on Wednesday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 0.3% to 18,925.73 points.

Investors were particularly focused on President Donald Trump's plans for substantial tax cuts. On Thursday, the House of Representatives narrowly approved a comprehensive tax proposal. The plans could increase the national debt by trillions of dollars over the next decade. The bill now moves to the Senate, which must also approve it.
