Flight Disruptions in Bali and Flores

Dozens of flights to and from the Indonesian island of Bali have been canceled or delayed due to volcanic eruptions on the island of Flores, hundreds of kilometers away. The airport in Maumere, Flores, has been completely closed following the eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano.

Volcanic Activity

The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted yesterday, spewing ash clouds up to 11 kilometers into the air. A second eruption occurred this morning, producing an ash plume approximately 1 kilometer high. The towering ash cloud has caused significant disruptions to air travel.

Evacuations and Impact

Two nearby villages were evacuated as a result of the eruption. Streets were covered in thick layers of ash, gravel, and sand. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

Future Outlook

Authorities expect the ash cloud to dissipate later today, allowing flights to Bali and Maumere to resume. The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano has been active since 2023, with its last major eruption occurring in 2003. A previous eruption in November 2024 claimed at least ten lives.

Ring of Fire

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for high seismic and volcanic activity. The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano has caused flight disruptions in Bali as recently as March 2025.
