Heavy floods in eastern South Africa have claimed the lives of at least 49 people, with eight bodies recovered from a school bus that was swept away by the raging waters today. The bus was carrying thirteen schoolchildren and two adults, and some passengers remain missing, according to regional officials.

Since the weekend, South Africa has been battered by torrential rains, snow, and strong winds, with the Eastern Cape province on the east coast bearing the brunt of the extreme weather. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated, transportation has ground to a halt, and infrastructure has suffered extensive damage.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has urgently called for additional aid, stating, "The death toll continues to rise, and the situation is dire." President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and urged the public to exercise caution.

Floods in South Africa are becoming increasingly frequent and severe due to climate change. In April 2022, similar extreme weather and flooding along the east coast resulted in over 400 fatalities and left thousands homeless, prompting the deployment of 10,000 military personnel for relief efforts.
