A shocking incident of youth violence has rocked the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht, where a 15-year-old boy was set on fire by multiple suspects on Friday evening. The victim, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was rushed to the specialized burn center at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Neder-Over-Heembeek.

Desperate Escape into Canal

The attack occurred at the Biestebroekkaai, near the Brussels-Charleroi canal. According to police reports, the teenager was set ablaze by several individuals. In a desperate attempt to escape the flames, he jumped from a bridge into the canal below. Emergency services found him in the water with severe burns covering his body.

'There is talk of possible involvement of several minors,' stated the Brussels-South police department, indicating that multiple juvenile suspects may be responsible for this horrific act.

Suspects in Custody

Belgian media outlet VRT reported that one minor suspect was brought before a youth judge on Saturday afternoon and sent to a closed youth institution for 30 days. At least two other minors are believed to be involved, though it remains unclear whether they have also been arrested.

The Queen Astrid Military Hospital, where the victim is being treated, is Belgium's premier burn treatment facility. The hospital's burn center has treated numerous severe cases, including three Ukrainian soldiers with combat-related burns who were admitted in September 2024 as part of Belgium's support for Ukraine.

Community Shocked by Violence

Anderlecht, one of Brussels' 19 municipalities with a population of approximately 126,581, has faced challenges with youth violence in recent years. The area has seen multiple incidents of serious crime, including shootings linked to drug-related conflicts.

'This is an absolutely horrific act that has shocked our community,' said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. 'We need to understand what drives young people to such extreme violence.'

Ongoing Investigation

Police are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances of the attack. Authorities have not released information about the victim's current condition or the possible motive behind the assault.

This incident comes amid broader concerns about youth violence in Belgium. According to crime statistics, while overall crime has decreased in recent years, violent crimes including physical violence have remained relatively steady.
