Protests have erupted across the United States following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis. The incident, which occurred on January 7, 2026, has ignited widespread condemnation and demands for ICE to leave Minnesota entirely.
Contradictory Accounts and Video Evidence
Federal officials, including President Donald Trump, claimed Good intentionally drove her vehicle toward an ICE agent, justifying the shooting as self-defense. However, video evidence obtained by bystanders tells a different story. 'I've seen the video and I want to tell you this: it's bullshit. This is about an agent recklessly using his power, resulting in someone dying, being killed,' said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat.
The footage shows Good's Honda Pilot parked perpendicular to the road as ICE agents attempted to pass. When agents approached her vehicle and one tried to open her door, Good reversed then moved forward. At that moment, another agent appeared in front of her vehicle. The agent fired three shots through the windshield and side window as the vehicle passed him.
Protests Turn Violent
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the local ICE headquarters in Minneapolis, where clashes with police resulted in officers deploying pepper spray against protesters. Similar protests have been organized or are planned in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
The incident has intensified existing tensions surrounding ICE's aggressive immigration enforcement tactics. Immigrant advocacy organizations have long accused ICE of systematically targeting people of color and those speaking Spanish or English with accents.
Investigation Controversy
The FBI has taken exclusive control of the investigation, removing the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) from the case. 'The investigation is now being done solely by the FBI,' said the head of the BCA. 'The BCA no longer has access to the investigation, the evidence, or the interrogations needed to complete a thorough and independent investigation.'
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has expressed concern about obtaining a fair investigation, while federal officials defend the FBI's exclusive jurisdiction. The incident occurred amid an influx of approximately 2,000 federal law enforcement members to the Twin Cities area.
Victim's Background and Community Response
Renee Good, a poet and mother of three children ages 15, 12, and 6, was relatively new to Minneapolis. She leaves behind a partner and her children from a previous marriage. Community members have organized vigils and memorials, with thousands attending to honor her memory.
This shooting represents at least the fifth fatality in U.S. immigration crackdown operations, according to MPR News reports. The protests highlight ongoing national debates about immigration enforcement, police accountability, and the expanding role of federal agencies in local communities.
