FBI arrests NBA coach Chauncey Billups and player Terry Rozier in massive gambling scandal involving organized crime, insider information, and sophisticated cheating technology affecting tens of millions of dollars.
Major NBA Gambling Scandal Rocks Basketball World
The FBI has arrested Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier in connection with two major illegal gambling schemes involving tens of millions of dollars and organized crime connections. The arrests come after a multi-year investigation spanning eleven states that has resulted in charges against 34 individuals, including thirteen with alleged mafia connections.
Sophisticated Fraud Schemes Uncovered
According to federal prosecutors, the investigation revealed two separate but sophisticated fraud operations. In one scheme, Rozier and former NBA player Damon Jones allegedly participated in passing confidential information about player injuries and game plans to organized crime groups to facilitate illegal betting on NBA games. The indictment highlights seven games during the 2023-2024 season where hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal bets were placed using insider tips.
"The scale and sophistication of this fraud is absolutely staggering," said FBI Director Kash Patel during a press conference. "We're talking about tens of millions of dollars in fraudulent activity that has compromised the integrity of professional sports."
Specific Allegations Against NBA Figures
Rozier, 31, is accused of manipulating his performance in an NBA game to benefit illegal betting operations. According to court documents, the Miami Heat guard allegedly informed associates in March 2023 that he planned to exit a game early with a supposed injury. He indeed left the game after just nine minutes, generating tens of thousands of dollars in winnings for the betting operation. The money was later delivered to his residence.
Billups, 47, faces charges related to an illegal poker operation allegedly tied to the Mafia. The former NBA champion and current Trail Blazers coach allegedly served as a "face card" to lure wealthy victims into rigged poker games using sophisticated cheating technology including X-ray tables and special contact lenses that could read cards.
Organized Crime Involvement
The investigation has uncovered connections to multiple organized crime families, including the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families. The poker scheme alone allegedly generated over $7 million in fraudulent winnings since 2019 through the use of rigged shuffling machines and sophisticated cheating devices.
"This represents one of the most significant sports corruption schemes we've seen since the legalization of online sports betting," said sports law expert Professor Michael McCann. "The involvement of organized crime and the use of sophisticated technology to cheat victims shows how these operations have evolved."
NBA Response and Precedents
The NBA has placed both Billups and Rozier on immediate leave from their respective teams. In a statement, the league said it takes the allegations "with the utmost seriousness" and will cooperate fully with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
This scandal follows last year's lifetime ban of Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter for his involvement in a gambling scheme where he allegedly bet on games he could influence. NBA players are strictly prohibited from gambling on league games, and former star Gilbert Arenas was arrested in July for allegedly organizing illegal poker games at his Los Angeles mansion.
The case represents a significant challenge for the NBA as legal sports betting continues to expand across the United States. With more states legalizing sports gambling, the league faces increasing pressure to maintain the integrity of its games while navigating the complex relationship between professional sports and the gambling industry.
