Arrest of Former First Lady

Kim Keon Hee, wife of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, was arrested in Seoul on fraud and corruption charges following a court-issued warrant. She faces multiple allegations including stock manipulation, bribery, and illegal influence peddling.

Luxury Item Controversy

Prosecutors allege Kim wore an undeclared Van Cleef necklace worth €37,000 during the 2022 NATO summit. She claims it was a fake purchased in Hong Kong. Additional charges involve accepting Chanel handbags valued at €12,000 and a diamond necklace from religious groups in exchange for political favors.

Political Context

Kim's arrest follows husband Yoon Suk Yeol's December 2024 declaration of martial law and subsequent impeachment. Yoon currently faces insurrection charges that could carry life imprisonment or capital punishment. This marks the first time in South Korean history both a president and first lady are simultaneously incarcerated.

Legal Consequences

Kim risks significant prison time if convicted. South Korea maintains though rarely implements capital punishment, with 59 currently on death row. The country has observed an execution moratorium since 1997 despite retaining the penalty in law.
