Saab Achieves AI Milestone in Fighter Jet Technology

Saab, in collaboration with defense AI company Helsing, has successfully completed the first three flights integrating artificial intelligence into its Gripen E fighter jet. The tests, conducted between May 28 and June 3, 2025, mark a breakthrough in military aviation autonomy.

Centaur AI Agent Takes Control

During the flights, Helsing's 'Centaur' AI agent autonomously executed complex Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat maneuvers. The AI successfully identified targets and cued the pilot to fire weapons, demonstrating advanced decision-making capabilities in simulated combat scenarios.

Real-World Testing Environment

The third flight tested Centaur against an actual Gripen D aircraft in dynamic BVR engagements. The AI maintained performance under variable conditions including distance, speed, and disabled command data. This testing validates Gripen E's open-architecture design allowing rapid AI integration without compromising safety protocols.

Project Beyond Advances

These flights are part of Saab's 'Project Beyond' initiative, sponsored by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). Peter Nilsson, head of Advanced Programmes at Saab Aeronautics, emphasized: "In software there are no generations, only speed." Further test flights are planned throughout 2025 to refine Centaur's capabilities.

The Gripen E continues to demonstrate its role as a next-generation platform capable of outperforming evolving threats through continuous technological upgrades.
