A 17-year-old Italian boy died after being buried alive when a sand hole he dug collapsed on him at Montalto di Castro beach. Riccardo Boni from Rome suffocated under the sand while vacationing with his family.

The tragedy occurred yesterday afternoon approximately 100km northwest of Rome. Riccardo had been digging a 1.5-meter deep hole with his younger brothers (aged 5 and 8) before they returned to their parents. Investigators believe he continued digging a tunnel when the walls suddenly collapsed.

Rescue Attempts

After noticing his absence, the family searched for 40 minutes before the youngest brother identified the now-invisible hole location. The father and bystanders excavated the site to find Riccardo's lifeless body. Emergency resuscitation attempts failed.

Community Reaction

Montalto di Castro's mayor described the tragedy as community-shocking: "It's unthinkable a young man could die this way - like a mouse in a trap." Police and prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident.
