Day of National Mourning in Suriname After Deadly Boat Accident

Suriname observes a day of national mourning after a boat accident kills seven people. The cause is still under investigation.

Suriname has declared a day of national mourning following a tragic boat accident on the Marowijne River last Sunday, which claimed seven lives.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. According to Surinamese news site Starnieuws, the boat capsized suddenly near Albina, a town in the northern part of the country.

Thirteen people were on board, all of whom ended up in the water. Six were rescued alive, while three bodies were recovered on the same day. The remaining victims were found during subsequent search operations.

Flags will be flown at half-mast on public buildings and ships, and President Santokhi will sign a condolence register.
