Three migrants, including two minors, lost their lives overnight during an attempted crossing of the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom near Calais. French authorities confirmed the tragic incident, with another separate crossing attempt leaving three people missing.

Overcrowded and Dangerous Conditions

The victims likely died from compression injuries when their overcrowded inflatable boat attempted the perilous journey. According to Laurent Touvet, prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region, 'The boat was carrying more than 70 people in dangerously overcrowded conditions' during the fatal crossing attempt.

Record Numbers and Rising Death Toll

This tragedy brings the total number of Channel crossing fatalities to 23 since the beginning of 2025, according to AFP analysis. The incident follows Tuesday's death of a woman in a British hospital after she attempted the crossing.

Enver Solomon, director of the Refugee Council, told the BBC: 'These deaths happen far too often and to prevent more, the government must work with our French and European neighbors. We need to share responsibility and create safe and legal routes for people to come to the United Kingdom.'

Unprecedented Migration Numbers

Since January 2025, an unprecedented 30,000 people have attempted the Channel crossing in small boats—a record number that surpasses the previous four years combined. Last Saturday alone, seventeen boats made the crossing carrying over a thousand migrants.

Political Response and International Agreements

The new UK Home Secretary Mahmood recently promised to begin deporting illegal migrants to France under agreements reached in August. British Prime Minister Starmer and French President Macron announced a new arrangement months ago that would allow for the return of migrants from the UK to France, though this remains in a trial period with limited numbers.

According to UK correspondent Fleur Launspach, 'Illegal migration now tops the concerns of British voters. With numbers rising again and Nigel Farage's anti-immigration party back in politics, the debate and discontent are swelling anew.'

The dangerous crossings typically occur in small inflatable boats just meters long, often overloaded with passengers and frequently without life jackets, creating extremely hazardous conditions in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
