Deadly Capsizing in Stormy Waters

At least 34 people died when the Wonder Sea tourist boat capsized in Vietnam's Ha Long Bay during severe weather on July 19, 2025. The vessel was carrying 53 people - 5 crew members and 48 tourists, including 20 children - when it encountered sudden storm conditions around 2 PM local time.

Rescue Efforts Hampered

Coast guard officials reported losing the boat's GPS signal 30 minutes before the capsizing. Nearly 30 rescue vessels responded to the disaster, finding the boat upside down in the water. Divers managed to save several passengers, including a 14-year-old boy who survived for four hours in an air pocket in the steering cabin.

Rescue operations continue in darkness and heavy rain, with authorities attempting to right the vessel using a crane ship. Strong currents have prevented crews from securing ropes around the hull.

About Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, features over 1,600 limestone islands and islets in northeastern Vietnam. The name "Ha Long" translates to "descending dragon," referencing a local legend about protective dragons. Covering approximately 1,553 km², the bay attracts millions of tourists annually for its dramatic seascapes and cruise tours.

Safety Questions Arise

Authorities confirmed the Wonder Sea passed its last safety inspection in January 2025 and was operating within passenger capacity limits. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

Storm Causes Land Damage

Storm Wipha, which entered the South China Sea before the accident, also caused significant damage on land. A music festival stage collapsed, trees were uprooted, and a lightning strike ignited a fire on a mountain peak.
