Commercial Vessel Attacked Near Yemeni Coast

The Liberian-flagged cargo ship Magic Seas came under heavy fire in the Red Sea off Hodeida, Yemen, on July 5, 2025. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), multiple small boats assaulted the vessel with grenades during afternoon hours.

Crew Abandons Damaged Vessel

The attack caused significant damage, with the ship taking on water and catching fire. Crew members returned fire before abandoning ship and awaiting rescue. No casualties have been reported.

Houthi Rebels Suspected

While no group has claimed responsibility, the attack location near Hodeida suggests involvement by Houthi rebels. The Iran-backed group has conducted over 100 maritime attacks since November 2023, citing solidarity with Palestinians. Previous attacks sank two vessels and killed four sailors.

End of Relative Calm

This incident marks the first major assault after months of reduced activity. Maritime traffic had recently increased following a period of relative calm, though Houthis continued missile attacks toward Israel.

International Response

Multiple nations including the Netherlands patrol the Red Sea to protect shipping lanes. The US and UK have conducted airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, with Dutch support. The Red Sea remains crucial for global trade, connecting Mediterranean and Indian Ocean routes via the Suez Canal.
