British ultrarunner crosses Australia in 35 days: over two marathons a day

Despite losing toenails, a rotting toe, and hallucinations from chronic sleep deprivation due to severe bone pain, British ultrarunner William Goodge (31) has set a new record by running across Australia in just 35 days. He covered 3,800 kilometers from Cottesloe Beach in Perth to Bondi Beach in Sydney, averaging 100 kilometers (2.5 marathons) per day, breaking the previous record of 39 days.

Goodge began running marathons after his mother passed away from cancer in 2018. This journey raised funds for cancer research in the UK, US, and Australia. After finishing, he placed flowers on Bondi Beach in her memory, calling her "the most special person in my life."

He described the run as a "revolving nightmare" but drew strength from remembering his mother's struggle with illness. Goodge also holds the record for the fastest crossing of the US on foot (55 days).
