Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has denied any involvement in the alleged coup attempt following his electoral defeat in 2022. This marks the first time he has spoken out in court during the ongoing trial against him.
Bolsonaro is accused of conspiring with others to overturn the victory of his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. On January 8, 2023, thousands of his supporters stormed the Brazilian Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court, leading to the arrest of over 1,500 individuals.
In his defense, Bolsonaro stated, "There was never any coup attempt, not even during my administration. A coup is a terrible thing." He further argued that there was "no solid basis" for such an action, even if he had desired it.
The Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office also suspects Bolsonaro of being aware of plans to assassinate Lula, his vice president, and a high-ranking judge. Bolsonaro has denied these allegations as well.
The former president and seven co-defendants face potential prison sentences of up to 40 years. A verdict in the case is expected later this year. Bolsonaro has already been convicted of abuse of power, barring him from participating in elections until 2030.
