Golden Earring Guitarist George Kooymans Passes Away

George Kooymans, legendary guitarist and co-founder of Dutch rock band Golden Earring, has died at age 77. His family confirmed he succumbed to complications from ALS, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2021.

Founding Member and Musical Legacy

Kooymans co-founded the band in The Hague as a teenager alongside bassist Rinus Gerritsen. The group evolved into Golden Earring in 1969, featuring the iconic lineup of Kooymans, Gerritsen, Barry Hay, and Cesar Zuiderwijk - unchanged for over 50 years.

Global Rock Success

The band achieved worldwide fame with their 1973 hit "Radar Love", which became a staple on international radio. They sold millions of albums, earning over 30 gold and platinum certifications. Their success in the US market was particularly notable for a Dutch act.

ALS Battle and Band's End

Following Kooymans' ALS diagnosis, the band announced their dissolution in 2021. Bandmates declined to continue without him. Dutch radio stations collectively played "Radar Love" in tribute when his condition was revealed.

Farewell Concerts and Legacy

Recently announced farewell concerts for January 2026 sold out immediately. Kooymans endorsed these final shows, with proceeds supporting ALS research. His funeral will be private.
