NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced today in London that the alliance's air and missile defense capabilities need to be increased by 400%. This move is deemed necessary for "credible deterrence and defense." Parts of Rutte's speech were shared in a press release, where he emphasized the need to strengthen the shield protecting NATO airspace, citing Russia's aerial terror in Ukraine as a key reason.

In addition to air and missile defense, Rutte highlighted the need for thousands of additional armored vehicles and tanks, millions of artillery shells, and significant investments in logistics, supply chains, transport, and medical support. The message is framed as a priority for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague on June 24-25.

Rutte also proposed raising defense spending to 5% of GDP, with 3.5% allocated to pure defense expenditures and 1.5% to areas like cybersecurity and infrastructure that benefit defense. The Kremlin criticized the plan, calling it a confrontation strategy that European taxpayers will bear.
