The international pressure on Israel to halt the bombings in Gaza and allow humanitarian aid is increasing. Protests have erupted across Europe, with over 100,000 demonstrators in The Hague alone. Even within Israel, unrest is growing, including among military leadership. Despite this, Israel continues its attacks. 'The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and Israel's violence is disproportionate,' says Robert Serry, former UN envoy for the Middle East, in News Clearly de Wereld.

Serry explains that proportionality in warfare means adhering to the rules of war and military principles, avoiding civilian casualties, and allowing humanitarian access. 'Gaza has been cut off for months, leading to dire situations. I really wonder what Israel is doing,' he adds.

Serry also references war theorist Clausewitz, who viewed war as politics by violent means. He questions Netanyahu's strategy of eliminating Hamas, which has failed for nearly two years, resulting in disproportionate violence. Serry warns of long-term consequences, including Israel's growing isolation and accusations of genocide.
