Apple announced that the App Store ecosystem in the U.S. facilitated $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024, according to a study by Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University and economist Dr. Jessica Burley. Notably, over 90% of these transactions did not incur any commission fees for developers.

Over the past five years, the App Store ecosystem has nearly tripled in size, growing from $142 billion in 2019 to $406 billion in 2024. U.S. developers saw their earnings more than double during this period, with small developers experiencing a 76% increase in earnings between 2021 and 2024.

Key growth areas included physical goods and services ($277 billion), in-app advertising ($75 billion), and digital goods and services ($53 billion). Categories like food delivery, entertainment, and enterprise apps drove this expansion. Additionally, U.S. developers achieved global success, with their apps ranking among the top downloads in 170 out of 175 App Store storefronts worldwide.
