Critical Border Crossing Destroyed by Flooding

The Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge, a vital border crossing between Nepal and China, was completely destroyed by flash flooding in the Trishuli River. The disaster occurred following heavy monsoon rains that caused the river to overflow its banks.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

Eighteen people are missing - 12 Nepalese and 6 Chinese nationals. Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli confirmed fatalities in a social media statement but didn't specify numbers. The Nepalese Army has deployed rescue teams to the affected area near Kodari to search for survivors.

Infrastructure Damage

The reinforced concrete bridge, originally built in 1964 and rebuilt in 2019 after earthquake damage, was completely washed away. Floodwaters also destroyed border facilities, swept away approximately 200 vehicles awaiting customs clearance, and damaged nearby infrastructure.

Economic and Trade Impact

This key transit point facilitated significant cross-border trade, with hundreds crossing daily for commerce. The bridge connected Nepal's Araniko Highway to China's National Road 318, serving as a crucial link for goods transportation between Kathmandu and Tibet.
