Swiss Alpine Village Nearly Buried After Mountain Collapse

In the Swiss Alps, a village was almost completely buried after a section of a mountain wall collapsed. The landslide in the village of Blatten was triggered by the partial collapse of a glacier, sending a massive amount of ice, mud, and rocks downhill.

Local authorities report that 90% of the village is now buried under debris. One person remains missing, and the military is en route to assist, according to Swiss broadcaster SRF.

Blatten had been evacuated earlier this month due to fears of a rock avalanche. Approximately 300 people live in the village.

Aerial footage shows houses destroyed by the debris. The mayor expressed shock, calling it an "unimaginable" event. The Swiss government has pledged full support for reconstruction.
