Devastating Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan
A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday evening, with the death toll rising dramatically to 2,205 confirmed fatalities according to Taliban officials. The quake, which was felt as far away as Kabul 240 kilometers from the epicenter, has left over 3,600 people injured and nearly 10,000 homes completely destroyed.
Emergency Response Underway
Volunteers from the Afghan Red Crescent Society are on the ground providing medical assistance and helping with recovery operations. The International Red Cross has set up emergency tents to provide medical care, as local hospitals in the affected region are overwhelmed. The Taliban regime has also distributed tents for displaced survivors.
Doctors Without Borders has deployed teams to the disaster zone, distributing trauma and wound care kits to regional hospitals. "We are working around the clock to provide critical medical support to those affected by this tragedy," said a spokesperson for the organization.
International Aid Appeal
The Taliban government has made an urgent appeal to the international community for assistance. "We desperately need help as thousands of people have died or lost their homes," a Taliban spokesperson stated. The Red Cross has launched a fundraising campaign seeking over 26 million euros for victims, emphasizing "Don't forget Afghanistan" in their appeal.
The earthquake struck Kunar Province on August 31, 2025, with two significant aftershocks following the initial tremor. The region's mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure have complicated rescue and relief efforts.
