Peak Traffic Conditions Across Europe

Europe experienced significant road congestion on August 2, 2025, known as "Black Saturday" - one of the busiest travel days of the summer holiday season. While traffic volumes are gradually decreasing across the continent, France remains particularly affected with major delays persisting throughout the day.

Critical Situation in France

France reported over 1000 kilometers of traffic jams at noon, primarily concentrated around popular holiday destinations. The Route du Soleil highway connecting Paris to the Côte d'Azur saw delays reaching 2.5 hours. Travelers heading toward the Spanish border via the A9 near Narbonne faced similar delays, while routes to the French west coast experienced extensive congestion.

Returning Holiday Traffic

Germany and Austria are experiencing traffic buildup from returning vacationers. The A10 highway between Salzburg and Villach in Austria reported heavy congestion, while Germany's A8 near Munich toward Austria saw slow-moving or stationary traffic. Roadworks throughout Germany are compounding the delays.

Alpine Passage Challenges

At Switzerland's Gotthard Tunnel, southbound travelers faced an additional 1.5 hours travel time. Similar delays were reported in Croatia, where the A1 highway south of Zagreb recorded over 90 minutes of congestion.

Dutch Border Controls

In the Netherlands, increased traffic is observed near the German border due to enhanced border controls. Additional local congestion is expected around Amsterdam for the Canal Parade and near Roermond for Festival Solar events.
