A horrific incident at Hamburg's Wandsbek-Markt metro station has left two people dead after a 25-year-old man from South Sudan pushed an 18-year-old German woman in front of an approaching train on Thursday evening. Police have confirmed that the attacker chose his victim completely at random - the two were strangers who happened to be on the same platform around 10:07 PM when the tragedy unfolded.

According to witness statements and security camera footage analyzed by investigators, the man waited on the platform as a U1 line train approached. At the last moment, he approached the young woman, grabbed her, and threw himself with her onto the tracks. Both were struck by the train and died instantly at the scene.

UN Resettlement Program Under Scrutiny

The suspect had arrived in Germany through a UN resettlement program in 2024 after fleeing South Sudan to Kenya. These programs are specifically designed for vulnerable refugees with poor future prospects who need extra protection and assistance. All participants undergo extensive screening by security services before being accepted.

'Why this man was included in the program despite security screenings remains unclear to us at this stage,' a police spokesperson told reporters during a press conference. The German Public Prosecutor's Office revealed they already had the man under investigation in a separate criminal case, though they declined to specify the nature of the charges.
