Suspect in Custody After Deadly Campus Shooting

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the mass shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured. The arrest came after an intensive overnight manhunt involving more than 400 officers from multiple law enforcement agencies.

The shooting occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at approximately 4:05 p.m. EST in Room 166 of the Barus and Holley engineering building during a final exam review session for an introductory economics class. According to NBC News reports, the suspect was described as a male in his 30s wearing dark clothing or gray camouflage.

Massive Police Response and Investigation

The Providence Police Department, along with federal agencies including the FBI and ATF, launched what authorities called one of the largest manhunts in recent Rhode Island history. The suspect was apprehended around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 20 miles from the Brown University campus.

Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez stated, 'We have a person of interest in custody and are continuing our investigation. This was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies working through the night.' The chief added that law enforcement would be coordinating with prosecutors, collecting evidence, and interviewing eyewitnesses in the coming days.

Campus Reopens with Restrictions

Brown University officials announced that the campus has reopened following the lifting of shelter-in-place orders that had been in effect for nearly 12 hours. However, certain areas remain restricted as active crime scenes.

In a statement on the university's website, Brown University President Christina Paxson said, 'This is an unimaginably tragic day for our community. Our hearts are with the victims and their families.' She confirmed that both deceased individuals were students, as were at least eight of the nine injured victims.

The university has canceled Sunday exams and is providing counseling services to students, faculty, and staff. University officials noted that while the campus is open, access to Minden Hall and nearby apartment buildings remains limited as police continue their investigation.

Victims and Medical Response

Of the nine injured victims, seven remain in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital, one is in critical but stable condition, and one has been discharged. Medical personnel responded quickly to the scene, with emergency services transporting victims within minutes of the shooting.

This incident marks the first mass shooting to occur at an Ivy League university, according to historical records. Brown University, founded in 1764, is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or any potential motive for the attack. The investigation continues as forensic teams process the crime scene and interview witnesses who were present during the shooting.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the academic community and raised questions about campus security at universities nationwide. Students described hiding under desks and barricading doors during the attack, with many expressing gratitude for the rapid police response.

As the Brown University community begins the difficult process of healing, university officials have established a support hotline and are planning memorial services for the victims. The incident has prompted discussions about gun violence on college campuses and security measures during high-stress periods like final exams.
