According to court documents, the Miami Heat guard allegedly informed associates in March 2023 that he planned to exit a game early with a supposed injury. He indeed left the game after just nine minutes, generating tens of thousands of dollars in winnings for the betting operation. The money was later delivered to his residence.

Billups, 47, faces charges related to an illegal poker operation allegedly tied to the Mafia. The former NBA champion and current Trail Blazers coach allegedly served as a "face card" to lure wealthy victims into rigged poker games using sophisticated cheating technology including X-ray tables and special contact lenses that could read cards.

Organized Crime Involvement

The investigation has uncovered connections to multiple organized crime families, including the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families. The poker scheme alone allegedly generated over $7 million in fraudulent winnings since 2019 through the use of rigged shuffling machines and sophisticated cheating devices.

"This represents one of the most significant sports corruption schemes we've seen since the legalization of online sports betting," said sports law expert Professor Michael McCann. "The involvement of organized crime and the use of sophisticated technology to cheat victims shows how these operations have evolved."

NBA Response and Precedents

The NBA has placed both Billups and Rozier on immediate leave from their respective teams. In a statement, the league said it takes the allegations "with the utmost seriousness" and will cooperate fully with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
