Teenage Shooter Attacks Izmir Police Station

A 16-year-old boy has carried out a shooting attack at a police station in Izmir, Turkey, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and leaving at least two others wounded, one critically. The incident occurred on Monday morning at the local police headquarters in Turkey's third-largest city.

Details of the Attack

According to Turkish broadcaster NTV, the teenage assailant wore a balaclava during the attack and used his father's hunting rifle. Security footage shows the youth entering the police station premises before opening fire on officers at close range.

'The suspect was shot in the leg during his arrest and is currently receiving medical treatment while in custody,' a police spokesperson stated.

Motive Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack. Preliminary reports indicate the teenager had previously been detained at the same police station but was released some time ago. The suspect claims he was mistreated during his earlier detention.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that

'All necessary measures are being taken to ensure such incidents do not occur again. We will thoroughly investigate the allegations of mistreatment.'

Security Response

Following the attack, additional security forces were deployed to the area, and the police station remains cordoned off as investigations continue. The incident has raised concerns about police station security protocols across Turkey.

Izmir, a major port city on Turkey's Aegean coast with over 4 million residents, has generally been considered more stable than other regions, though Turkey has faced various security challenges in recent years including terrorist attacks and civil unrest.
