This massacre follows another recent attack in Playas where nine people were shot dead while playing pool. Despite President Daniel Noboa declaring war on organized crime in 2024, violence has dramatically increased. Official statistics show 4,619 homicides in Ecuador during the first half of 2025 - a 47% surge compared to 2024.

Ecuador's murder rate has skyrocketed from South America's lowest to among its highest since 2020.
