Suspect Arrested in Fauja Singh's Death

Indian police have arrested a 26-year-old man for the hit-and-run incident that killed Fauja Singh, recognized as the world's oldest marathon runner at 114 years old. The incident occurred in Punjab when Singh was struck by an SUV while crossing a road on Sunday. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Investigation Details

Authorities confirmed the suspect was driving at high speed in a Fortuner SUV. Witnesses reported Singh was thrown 1.5-2 meters into the air upon impact. Police impounded the vehicle and stated Singh might have survived with prompt medical attention. Charges are pending as investigators determine appropriate legal proceedings.

Life of the Turbaned Tornado

Singh achieved global fame as the first centenarian to complete a full marathon (Toronto 2011), though his records remained unofficial due to lacking birth documentation. His distinctive turban during races earned him the nickname "Turbaned Tornado." Remarkably, he began running at age 83 to cope with grief after his son's death, eventually logging daily 16km runs until his passing.

Enduring Legacy

Born in 1911 in Punjab, Singh overcame childhood mobility challenges and worked as a farmer before moving to London in the 1990s. His 2004 Adidas campaign alongside Muhammad Ali and role as 2012 Olympic torchbearer cemented his inspirational status. Sikhs In The City, his running club, announced commemorative events in Ilford to honor his legacy.
