Anthropic, the American artificial intelligence company known for its Claude AI models, has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a massive copyright infringement lawsuit brought by authors and publishers. This settlement represents the largest copyright recovery in history and sets a significant precedent for AI companies using copyrighted materials for training purposes.

The lawsuit centered around Anthropic's practice of downloading over 7 million books from illegal websites to train its AI chatbot. Under the settlement terms, Anthropic will pay $3,000 per book for approximately 500,000 books covered by the agreement, totaling $1.5 billion. Legal analysts had warned that if the case went to trial in December, Anthropic could have faced damages "potentially multiple billions—enough to bankrupt the company," according to a Wolters Kluwer legal analyst speaking to AP.
