At least eleven people have died and more than thirty were injured in a stampede at a cricket stadium in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.

The chaos erupted when tens of thousands of cricket fans gathered outside the stadium to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic win in the Indian Premier League. The team had won the prestigious competition for the first time ever.

The chief minister of Karnataka, where Bengaluru is located, stated that the crowd attempted to force their way through one of the stadium gates to join the celebration. "No one expected such a massive crowd," he said. While 35,000 people were anticipated, between 200,000 and 300,000 showed up.

He promised an investigation and expressed condolences to the victims' families. Prime Minister Modi called the incident "utterly heartbreaking" and offered prayers for the injured.
