Tragic Discovery in Vikos Gorge

A 64-year-old Dutch woman from Limburg has been found dead in the Vikos Gorge in northwestern Greece after going missing during a hiking trip with her husband. Her body was discovered using drones in the 300-meter deep canyon, one of the deepest gorges in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records.

Details of the Incident

The couple was hiking near the Vikos Gorge in the Pindus Mountains when the woman disappeared near a viewpoint. Her husband had stepped away to take photographs and returned to find her missing. After an unsuccessful search, he immediately alerted emergency services.

The search operation proved extremely challenging due to the rugged mountainous terrain and the gorge's depth. Special rescue teams with climbers were deployed to attempt recovery of the body from the difficult-to-access location.

About Vikos Gorge

The Vikos Gorge, located in the Vikos–Aoös National Park in the Zagori region, stretches 32 kilometers with depths ranging from 120 to 1,350 meters. It's renowned as one of the world's deepest gorges relative to its width and is a popular tourist destination known for its dramatic landscapes and hiking trails.

Despite its beauty, the gorge presents significant dangers due to steep cliffs, unstable terrain, and sudden weather changes. Local authorities have repeatedly warned tourists about the risks of venturing too close to the edges.

This incident follows other recent cases of missing Dutch tourists in Greece, highlighting the importance of safety precautions when exploring remote natural areas.
