The police suspect that the driver who hit a crowd in Liverpool on Monday evening may have been following an ambulance. Water Street, where the incident occurred, had been temporarily cleared to allow ambulance workers to assist a person possibly suffering a heart attack.
Merseyside police revealed this during a press conference. The 53-year-old suspect, a British man from the Liverpool area, is accused of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence.
Footage shows the man driving into dozens of pedestrians on Water Street. Tens of thousands of fans were celebrating Liverpool FC's Premier League title, with many roads in the city closed off.
Fifty victims were hospitalized, with eleven still receiving treatment. Their condition is stable.
The police are holding the suspect in custody. His motive remains unknown, but terrorism has been ruled out. According to the police, the driver's car was the only one following the ambulance.
