First Look at Sophie Turner's Lara Croft Revealed
Prime Video has released the first official image of Sophie Turner as iconic video game adventurer Lara Croft in the upcoming live-action Tomb Raider series. The Game of Thrones alumna undergoes a dramatic physical transformation for the role, marking her most significant project since the HBO fantasy series ended in 2019.
Intense Training Regimen
Turner revealed she underwent rigorous training to prepare for the physically demanding role, working out eight hours a day, five days a week since February 2023. 'I had never worked out before this role,' Turner admitted in interviews. 'It took months and months to get into shape. I'm excited to learn how to throw a punch rather than just taking hits like I did in previous roles.'
The series, currently in production, features an impressive creative team led by Emmy-winning writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) who serves as creator, writer, and executive producer alongside co-showrunner Chad Hodge. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) directs the series, which is a collaboration between Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios.

The supporting cast includes Hollywood legends Sigourney Weaver as mysterious businesswoman Evelyn Wallis and Jason Isaacs as Lara's uncle Atlas DeMornay. Martin Bobb-Semple plays tech support character Zip, while Bill Paterson portrays Winston, the Croft family butler. The series also introduces new characters including Sasha (played by Sasha Luss) as a competitive adversary.

Turner becomes the third actress to portray Lara Croft on screen, following Angelina Jolie's films in 2001 and 2003, and Alicia Vikander's 2018 reboot. The Tomb Raider video game franchise, created by Core Design in 1996, has sold over 100 million units worldwide according to Wikipedia, making Lara Croft one of gaming's most recognizable characters.
The series was first announced in development in January 2023, with Turner's casting revealed in November 2024. Production began in early 2026, with a likely premiere in late 2026 or 2027. This adaptation comes as part of Amazon's strategy to expand successful video game franchises into television, following the success of Fallout.

For Turner, this role represents a significant career evolution. The 29-year-old actress gained international fame as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, a role she played from ages 14 to 23.
