End of Era at Red Bull Racing
Christian Horner has been dismissed as Team Principal of Red Bull Racing after two decades leading the Formula 1 team that propelled Max Verstappen to four world championships. The surprise announcement came without explanation beyond a statement thanking Horner for his contributions.
Performance Decline and Controversies
The decision follows Red Bull's unexpected performance slump in the 2025 season. Current championship leader Max Verstappen sits third in the standings, while teammate Yuki Tsunoda struggles in seventeenth position. Horner's position had been under scrutiny since early 2024 when he faced misconduct allegations from a female employee. Although cleared internally, the accuser appealed the decision.
Verstappen's Tribute and Future
Verstappen acknowledged Horner's departure on social media: "From my first win to four world titles, we celebrated incredible successes together." The dismissal adds uncertainty to Verstappen's future amid rumors linking him to Mercedes, despite his Red Bull contract extending through 2028.
Historic Achievements
Horner's tenure featured remarkable success: six constructors' championships and eight drivers' titles - four each for Sebastian Vettel (2010-2013) and Verstappen (2021-2024). The team dominated 2023, winning 21 of 22 races.
Leadership Changes
Frenchman Laurent Mekies (48) replaces Horner, moving from sister team Racing Bulls. This continues an exodus of key personnel including legendary designer Adrian Newey (Aston Martin) and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley (Sauber/Audi).
