Historic Television Memorabilia Auction Shatters Expectations

In a stunning display of fan devotion, a comprehensive auction of costumes, props, and set pieces from the beloved television and film series Downton Abbey has raised approximately £1.7 million (nearly €2 million) for charity. The auction, conducted by renowned auction house Bonhams, far exceeded expectations, with proceeds benefiting Together for Short Lives, an organization supporting children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Bell Wall Emerges as Top Lot

The standout item of the auction was the iconic bell wall, a panel featuring bells used to summon servants throughout the series. This piece, which appeared in every season and film, sold for an astonishing £216,000 (approximately €248,000) – more than 30 times its estimated value of £7,000. 'We anticipated strong interest, but these results are truly extraordinary,' commented a Bonhams spokesperson.

Additional Notable Sales

Other significant items included the walking stick belonging to Violet Crawley, portrayed by Dame Maggie Smith, which fetched £28,180. A signed script from the very first episode, autographed by most of the cast and creators, realized £24,320. The auction attracted 15,000 visitors during the month-long viewing period in London, with free tickets being snapped up by enthusiastic fans.

Series Legacy and Conclusion

Downton Abbey, created by Julian Fellowes and produced by Carnival Films, premiered in 2010 and concluded with its third film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which premiered last week. The series, set in England between 1912 and 1930, followed the aristocratic Crawley family and their household staff, becoming a global phenomenon that spanned six television seasons and three feature films.

This marks the second major television memorabilia auction by Bonhams, following last year's successful sale of items from Netflix's The Crown, which also raised nearly £1.7 million for charity. The overwhelming response demonstrates the enduring appeal of quality period dramas and the deep connection fans maintain with these cultural touchstones.
