Dutch F-35 Deployment to Poland

The Netherlands will deploy F-35 fighter jets to Poland this autumn as part of a NATO mission. Outgoing Defense Minister Brekelmans announced the deployment in a letter to Parliament, confirming that Dutch F-35s will operate from Polish territory between September and December 2025.

Strengthening NATO's Eastern Flank

The mission aims to bolster NATO's eastern flank defenses against drone and cruise missile threats. The Netherlands will coordinate this deployment with Norway, though specific operational details remain undisclosed. This move comes amid heightened security concerns in Eastern Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New Defense Agreement Signed

Minister Brekelmans and outgoing Prime Minister Schoof visited Warsaw to sign an updated defense cooperation agreement with Polish Prime Minister Tusk and Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz. The new pact replaces a Cold War-era agreement and reflects current geopolitical realities.

The enhanced cooperation includes expanded joint training exercises and increased Dutch military training activities on Polish soil. This agreement marks a significant deepening of defense ties between the two NATO members.

Dutch F-35 Capabilities

The Netherlands currently operates 46 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters, with 38 stationed at Leeuwarden and Volkel air bases. The remaining eight are based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona for training purposes. The Dutch fleet is scheduled to expand to 57 aircraft by 2028.

About the F-35 Program

The F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation multirole combat aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin. Featuring advanced stealth capabilities, sensor fusion, and supersonic speeds, the F-35 serves air forces worldwide. The Netherlands became a program partner during the development phase and received its first operational F-35 in 2019.

NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence

This deployment contributes to NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) initiative, established after Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. The EFP positions multinational battalion-sized battle groups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland to deter aggression and demonstrate alliance solidarity.
