Iran Resumes Cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency

Diplomatic Breakthrough in Cairo as Iran and IAEA Restart Nuclear Monitoring

In a significant diplomatic development, Iran has agreed to resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following high-level talks in Cairo. The agreement, signed by Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, marks a crucial step toward restoring international monitoring of Iran's nuclear facilities.

Restoring Access to Nuclear Sites

The breakthrough comes after months of escalating tensions. The IAEA had lost access to Iranian nuclear installations following Israeli and US attacks in June 2025. In early July, Iranian President Pezeshkian signed legislation suspending cooperation with the nuclear watchdog, which the IAEA described as a "serious matter."

"This is a step in the right direction that opens the door to diplomacy and stability," stated IAEA Director Grossi in a social media post following the meeting. He expressed gratitude to Egyptian President al-Sisi for facilitating the critical discussions.

European Pressure and Snapback Mechanism

The agreement follows intense diplomatic pressure from European powers. France, England, and Germany had warned Iran in early August about the potential reimposition of sanctions through the snapback mechanism established under UN Resolution 2231 from 2015.

This mechanism allows for the automatic reinstatement of UN sanctions from 2006-2010 if Iran violates terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The European countries initiated a 30-day procedure last month, giving Iran a deadline to comply with international demands.

Ongoing Diplomatic Challenges

Despite the positive development, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi issued a stern warning following the Cairo meeting. He stated that if the UN Security Council reinstates sanctions against Iran, it would mean the end of the newly signed agreement with the IAEA.

The resumption of IAEA inspections represents a delicate balancing act for all parties involved. While providing temporary relief from immediate sanctions threats, the agreement leaves broader questions about the future of the nuclear deal unresolved. The international community will be closely monitoring Iran's compliance with the renewed inspection regime.
