Ukraine Stands Firm Against Land Concessions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has categorically rejected any territorial concessions to Russia ahead of the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This comes in response to Trump's announcement that parties are close to a ceasefire agreement potentially involving land swaps.
Constitutional Constraints
Zelensky emphasized that surrendering territory violates Ukraine's constitution, stating in a video address: "No one can deviate from this. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier." The president's remarks directly counter reports that Putin would end the war if Ukraine cedes the Donbas region.
Diplomatic Developments
According to Wall Street Journal sources, Putin presented this proposal through U.S. diplomat Steve Witkoff during Wednesday's Moscow meeting. While Trump reportedly didn't view it as a breakthrough, he considered it sufficiently substantive to warrant Friday's meeting in Alaska. European diplomats remain skeptical, interpreting the offer as a Russian attempt to evade sanctions.
Ukraine's Position
Zelensky clarified: "Naturally, we won't reward Russia for its actions. We're prepared to cooperate with President Trump and all partners for genuine, lasting peace." The Ukrainian leader stressed that any agreement must withstand Moscow's changing ambitions.
U.S. Pressure Tactics
The Trump administration has recently intensified pressure by threatening sanctions against nations purchasing Russian oil. Trump has publicly expressed frustration with Putin, questioning whether he's being manipulated. "I want him to stop attacking and sign a deal," Trump stated in April, signaling diminishing patience with Russian tactics.
