The European Union is nearly on track to meet its 2030 climate goals. If member states adhere to agreed plans, greenhouse gas emissions will decrease by 54% compared to 1990, just 1% below the target of 55%. However, the European Commission acknowledges room for improvement.

EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra highlights significant progress, with emissions already 37% lower in 2023 than in 1990. Yet, challenges remain in industrial emissions, energy savings, and CO2 storage. Five countries, including the Netherlands, are lagging behind.

Criticism from environmental groups is mounting, particularly over perceived leniency in climate policies and geopolitical compromises.
