Mass Shooting in Anaconda
A manhunt is underway for a gunman who killed four people at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana. The shooting occurred around 10:30 AM on August 1, 2025, when the suspect opened fire inside the establishment.
Victims and Suspect
Among the deceased were the bartender and three patrons. The bar's owner confirmed all victims were known to the shooter. Authorities identified the suspect as Michael Paul Brown, a 45-year-old former Army sergeant who served in Iraq. Brown lived adjacent to the bar.
Mental Health Concerns
Family members revealed Brown had long-standing mental health struggles. His niece stated: "This is a patient who sometimes doesn't know who he is. We've repeatedly tried to get him help without success."
Ongoing Search
Police located Brown's abandoned white Ford F-150 truck west of Anaconda near Stumptown Road. Over 50 law enforcement units and a helicopter are searching the mountainous terrain. Residents are advised to remain indoors as Brown is considered armed and dangerous.
Community Impact
Anaconda, a town of 9,000 residents nestled in a mountain valley, remains in lockdown. This marks Montana's deadliest shooting since 2015. Governor Greg Gianforte has asked for prayers for victims and first responders.
