Deadly Collision Claims Ten Lives in Central Mexico
A horrific collision between a freight train and a double-decker bus has left at least ten people dead and 55 injured in central Mexico. The accident occurred at a railway crossing in Atlacomulco, approximately 130 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
Investigation Launched into Safety Failures
The Mexican Attorney General's Office has initiated an investigation into the tragic incident that took place at an industrial park crossing. Surveillance footage captured the moment of impact, showing the freight train striking the bus with tremendous force.
"The bus was literally split in two by the impact. One section was dragged by the train while the other remained on the opposite side of the tracks," a witness reported to local authorities.
Safety Concerns at Mexican Railway Crossings
According to witnesses and preliminary investigations, the crossing lacked essential safety features including warning lights and crossing gates. This incident highlights growing concerns about railway safety infrastructure throughout Mexico.
The Mexican Railway Authority recently published a report indicating a significant increase in accidents at railway crossings. The report documented 800 crossing accidents in 2024, compared to 602 in 2020—representing a 33% increase over four years.
"Our thoughts are with the victims' families during this difficult time. We are cooperating fully with the investigation," stated a spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico, the freight operator involved.
Pattern of Railway Safety Issues
This tragedy follows another recent incident where six people died last month when a train struck multiple vehicles in Guanajuato state. Railway safety has become a pressing concern as Mexico's freight transportation network expands.
Mexico's railway system, which spans over 26,000 kilometers, has seen increased traffic due to growing trade volumes. However, safety infrastructure has not kept pace with this expansion, particularly at rural and industrial crossings.
The bus company operating the double-decker vehicle has not yet issued a statement regarding the accident. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, transporting the injured to local hospitals while recovery operations continued through the night.
