Dutch Vessel Targeted in Gulf of Aden Attack
A Dutch-flagged cargo ship, the MV Minervagracht, has been attacked in the Gulf of Aden approximately 200 kilometers southeast of the Yemeni port city of Aden. The incident resulted in two crew members being injured and the entire 19-person crew requiring evacuation by helicopter to nearby vessels.
According to the Dutch shipping company Spliethoff, which operates the vessel, the ship sustained significant damage during the attack. The British maritime organization UKMTO reported that the vessel was struck by "a projectile" and that a fire broke out on board. The extent of the injuries to the two wounded crew members remains unclear at this time.
Second Attack on Same Vessel
This marks the second attack on the MV Minervagracht within a week. According to British maritime intelligence firm Ambrey, the same vessel was targeted last Tuesday when an explosion was recorded nearby while the ship was en route to Djibouti.
The vessel was reportedly heading to Mumbai, India, according to tracking data from MarineTraffic. The UKMTO has issued warnings to other vessels in the Gulf of Aden to exercise caution following the incident.
Houthi Involvement Suspected
While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Yemeni media sources cited by Associated Press suggest a ballistic missile was likely launched from Houthi-controlled territory. The Houthi movement has been regularly targeting international shipping in the region since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, claiming solidarity with Palestinians.
"We are deeply concerned about the safety of our crew and are working to ensure their safe evacuation and medical care for the injured," a spokesperson for Spliethoff stated.
Background of Regional Maritime Threats
The Gulf of Aden serves as a critical shipping route, with approximately 21,000 vessels passing through annually, including 11% of the world's seaborne petroleum. The Houthis have intensified their maritime attacks in recent months, despite international efforts to secure the vital waterway.
Last year, Nieuwsuur reported that Dutch ships had received threat emails from Houthi rebels, warning that vessels visiting Israeli ports would be targeted. The MV Minervagracht had previously visited the Israeli port of Haifa, placing it on the Houthi "hitlist."
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as maritime security in the region remains a critical concern for global trade and shipping safety.
