Ceasefire Negotiations Reach Critical Juncture
Hamas has officially accepted a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, marking a potential turning point in the ongoing conflict. The proposal includes a 60-day truce during which Israeli forces would partially withdraw to allow large-scale humanitarian aid into the devastated Gaza Strip.
Key Elements of the Agreement
The comprehensive plan involves the release of 10 Israeli hostages—representing half of those believed still alive—in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners. Additionally, the remains of deceased hostages would be transferred. A second phase would see the release of all remaining captives.
International Mediation Efforts
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo to coordinate mediation efforts. Both leaders emphasized their rejection of Gaza's reoccupation and Palestinian displacement, underscoring the urgency of reaching a comprehensive agreement.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The announcement comes amid escalating humanitarian concerns. Amnesty International has accused Israel of implementing a "deliberate policy of starvation" in Gaza, where over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. UN agencies warn of famine conditions affecting more than two million residents.
Military Preparations Continue
Despite the diplomatic developments, Israel continues preparations for a major military offensive on Gaza City. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Hamas is "under atomic pressure" and that military missions are nearing completion. Defense Minister Israel Katz suggested Hamas's willingness to negotiate stems from fear of the impending operation.
Political Divisions in Israel
The Israeli response remains uncertain due to internal political divisions. Far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir strongly oppose any ceasefire, while Netanyahu faces pressure from massive protests demanding hostage releases. An estimated 400,000 demonstrators took to the streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem over the weekend.
International Reactions
US President Donald Trump has expressed support for continued military operations, stating on Truth Social that hostage returns are only possible through Hamas's destruction. The international community, including the UN, continues to call for immediate humanitarian access and an end to the blockade.
Prospects for Peace
While Hamas's acceptance represents a significant development, previous negotiation attempts have collapsed due to disagreements over ceasefire duration and prisoner exchanges. The current proposal closely mirrors earlier plans that Israel had largely accepted, raising hopes for a breakthrough despite the complex political landscape.
