A devastating fire that engulfed multiple residential towers in Hong Kong's Wang Fuk Court housing estate has claimed at least 44 lives, with authorities reporting that more than 250 residents remain unaccounted for. The blaze, which broke out on November 26, 2025, represents one of the deadliest building fires in Hong Kong's recent history.
Rapid Spread Through Construction Materials
The fire began around 3:00 PM local time in the Tai Po district and quickly spread from one tower to seven of the eight residential blocks in the complex. 'The high temperatures inside the buildings make it difficult for firefighters to enter for firefighting and rescue work,' explained a fire department spokesperson. The rapid spread appears to have been fueled by bamboo scaffolding and flammable foam panels that were installed as part of ongoing renovation work.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
Emergency services have been working around the clock in what has become one of Hong Kong's largest rescue operations in decades. More than 1,200 firefighters using 304 fire engines have been deployed to battle the blaze, which was upgraded to a No. 5 alarm - the highest emergency level. 'We are doing everything possible to reach those still trapped and account for all residents,' said Chief Fire Officer Chan Tak-shing during a press conference.
Arrests Made in Connection with Tragedy
Hong Kong police have arrested three individuals from Prestige Construction & Engineering Co Limited on suspicion of manslaughter. The arrested include two directors and one engineering consultant aged between 52 and 68. Authorities believe 'gross negligence' in construction practices contributed to the fire's rapid spread. The company was responsible for the HK$330 million renovation project underway at the time the fire broke out.
Political Fallout and Election Impact
The tragedy has had immediate political consequences, with Hong Kong leader John Lee announcing the suspension of all campaign activities ahead of scheduled elections. 'This is a massive catastrophe that requires our full attention and resources,' Lee stated, though he confirmed no decision had been made about postponing the elections themselves. Multiple political parties have voluntarily suspended their campaigns in response to the disaster.
Historical Context and Safety Concerns
This fire marks the deadliest building fire in Hong Kong since the 1996 Garley Building fire that killed 41 people. The incident has raised serious questions about construction safety standards, particularly regarding the use of bamboo scaffolding which authorities had planned to phase out earlier in 2025. The Independent Commission Against Corruption has launched an investigation into suspected graft related to the renovation project.
Ongoing Challenges for Rescue Teams

Despite these difficulties, firefighters managed to rescue a baby and an elderly woman more than eight hours after the fire began, though their medical conditions remain unknown. The complex houses approximately 2,000 apartments across eight 31-story towers, with initial estimates suggesting around 4,000 residents were affected.
