Controversial former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has announced his departure from politics. Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round of last year's presidential elections, but the results were annulled due to allegations of Russian interference. His campaign was also marred by irregularities, leading to his disqualification from the race.

In a Facebook video, the 63-year-old stated he would continue to monitor politics but would not join any political party or platform. He plans to focus on his family but may re-engage if he perceives violations of rights for those with differing political views.

Georgescu is currently under investigation for quoting a pre-war antisemitic fascist leader during a TV appearance. He had supported radical-right candidate George Simion in the subsequent election, who lost to pro-European Nicusor Dan.
