The western Turkish resort town of Marmaris was struck by an earthquake last night. At 02:17, the city was shaken by a quake with a magnitude of 5.8. There are no reports of significant damage.
At least one person has died. According to the regional governor, the victim was a 14-year-old girl who was hospitalized due to a panic attack and later passed away.
Around seventy people were injured while fleeing their homes in panic. Most suffered only minor injuries and were discharged after brief treatment. At least one person was hospitalized with more serious injuries.
The earthquake was also felt in nearby areas, including the Greek island of Rhodes, off the coast of Marmaris.
Earthquakes are frequent in this region. In 2023, over 55,000 people died in southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria due to a 7.7 magnitude quake and aftershocks. The area is still recovering from the disaster.
