Suriname Police Chief Removed Amid Corruption Investigation
Suriname's police chief Bryan Isaacs has been relieved of duty effective immediately following a series of corruption incidents within the police force. Justice and Police Minister Monorath summoned Isaacs earlier this week to explain multiple failures under his leadership.
Financial Mismanagement and Escapes
Investigations revealed significant funds and jewelry went missing from the narcotics brigade, while over 1 million Surinamese dollars (€23,400) disappeared from a police station safe. The incidents include prisoner escapes and fraud allegations against senior officers. At least one inspector has already been suspended.
Leadership Changes
Isaacs was appointed in March 2024 by former president Chan Santokhi. Current president Jennifer Simons also dismissed National Security Director Shivanand Ramlall. These personnel changes follow growing concerns about institutional integrity within Suriname's law enforcement agencies.
