UK Unveils Isambard-AI, Its Most Powerful AI Supercomputer

The University of Bristol has launched Isambard-AI, the United Kingdom's most powerful artificial intelligence supercomputer. Powered by 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, the system delivers 21 exaflops of AI performance. This makes it the fastest supercomputer in the UK and one of the most energy-efficient globally, ranking 11th in the TOP500 and 4th in the Green500 list.

Accelerating UK Research and Innovation

Isambard-AI represents a significant leap in computing capabilities for the UK. It is expected to drive breakthroughs in critical areas including AI-driven drug discovery, climate modeling, materials science, and the development of large language models tailored to UK languages and legal frameworks. The supercomputer, backed by a £225 million government investment, is a collaboration between NVIDIA, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), the University of Bristol, and other partners.

Flagship Research Projects

Several pioneering projects are already scheduled to run on Isambard-AI:

  • Nightingale AI: A health foundation model using NHS data for improved diagnostics
  • BritLLM: Developing UK-specific language models including Welsh
  • Cancer screening AI for earlier prostate cancer detection
  • Materials research for sustainable industrial alternatives
  • EgoAI: Assistive technology for dementia patients

Record-Breaking Construction

Completed in under two years, Isambard-AI was built using innovative parallel project management techniques. The facility features prefabricated modular data halls that were assembled in just 48 hours. The system became fully operational in June 2025 after breaking ground in June 2024.

World-Leading Energy Efficiency

Isambard-AI sets new environmental standards with direct liquid cooling technology that packs 440 GPUs per cabinet. The system operates on zero-carbon electricity and achieves a power usage effectiveness below 1.1. Hybrid cooling towers enable over 90% waterless operation, with potential for waste heat recycling.

National Strategic Asset

Managed by the UK Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Isambard-AI will prioritize projects aligned with national interests. The supercomputer will support both academic research and commercial innovation, cementing the UK's position in global AI development.
